“Last Run” is a head-on collision of the passions of artists Erik Foss and Joe Roberts. A piece of cardboard floats in mid-air, its shape reminiscent of an amulet. The energetic marker drawings mix sketches of aliens, smiley faces and peace signs with a one-point perspective drawing of a temple. Rainbow stripes radiate outwards and everything comes to a point at a cheeky image of Mickey Mouse. All this combines to create an image that could be an artifact from alternate dimension, or from a break in the space time continuum.
Erik and Joe met in 2011 and were immediately inspired by each other’s work. They set about collaborating soon after. They worked side by side at Erik’s New York City studio and once Joe returned to San Francisco, they mailed drawings back and forth, creating a bi-coastal studio practice.
Their collaboration is rooted in a shared interest in and inspiration by politics, comics, conspiracy theory, skateboarding, psychedelic, and counterculture. The contrast of innocence and degradation is a central vein in their work.
